Twelfth Knit is a doubly-thick cowl inspired by the brocade patterns of the Elizabethan Period and from a costume worn by actor Marc Rylance in his performance in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night.
Worked entirely in the round, the outer colorwork pattern is worked first, followed by a purl round and a simple, inner colorwork pattern. The inner pattern is folded inward, and the two ends are sewn to each other.
Make it in 2 colors with high contrast for a brighter look (see the teal & gold cowl at left), or in 2 colors with less contrast (see the red cowl above) to give the cowl a softer vibe.
