This stranded mitten pattern features mirrored designs on the right and left hands, with a different pattern on the palms. Knit from the cuff up, it features corrugated ribbing and a thumb gusset. The top is finished with grafting a small number of stitches together.
To knit this pattern, you will need fingering weight yarn in two contrasting colors — approximately 150 yds./137 m of the main color and approximately 135 yds./123 m of the contrast color. (Note that two skeins of the recommended yarn will be more than enough to knit two pairs of mittens!) You’ll also need three stitch markers, a yarn needle (to weave in ends), and a length of waste yarn (to hold your thumb stitches).
To knit this pattern, you need to know how to:
- knit and purl in the round using two colors,
- read and work from a colorwork chart,
- do directional increases (m1L and m1R), and
- graft using kitchener stitch.
Final dimensions:
Cuff circumference: 7.5 in./19 cm
Length: 8.75 in./22.25 cm from cuff to tip
Note: Knit in the gauge given, these mittens have a dense fabric. If you prefer a looser fabric and a slightly larger fit, go up one needle size from the size you need to obtain gauge.
