The brim of this hat is started with a provisional cast on and worked sideways as a long strip of garter stitch. The ends are joined with three-needle bind off and then stitches are picked up along one edge to knit the body of the hat. Decreases shape the crown, and the remaining stitches are worked as a long cord to which a tassel is attached after the knitting is complete.

Note: The brim is worked at a very tight gauge and stretches to fit snugly. Use larger needles for a looser fit.

Beatrix Potter’s England
The young lady who drew and wrote stories of Peter Rabbit and his farmyard friends later married and became an activist for preserving the farmland of the Lake District of England. She bought up thousands of acres of land and raised Hardwick sheep on her working farms. After her death, her properties became part of the UK’s National Trust and the land today looks much as it does in Potter’s day.
