Pfingstrose Shawl – Peony is a large deep-crescent shaped shawl based on Herbert Niebling’s pattern of the same name, Peony in English. Peony is worked from the top down with increases throughout the body. The original pattern, in half, is a half circle. I added patterns to the two edges for a softer deep-crescent shape. I hope to continue modifying these amazing designs into a shawl shape with well illustrated charts and clear instructions so more knitters will discover and enjoy the magic of Niebling.

Peony uses approximately 1,050 yards/960 meters of heavy-lace-weight yarns. It may also be knitted in lace-weight yarn for a more open look, or fingering-weight yarn for a denser fabric, and even larger shawl. Peonymay be knitted with or without beads. The number of beads used for applicable sections is listed below.

Skill Level
Medium to advanced. It’s not a difficult pattern as far as the type of stitches is concerned for there aren’t any new or unusual stitches. It is, however, a VERY complicated pattern when it comes to following the sequence of the charts, especially towards the end of the shawl. This pattern is not for anyone new to chart or lace knitting, or who has trouble following complicated instructions/directions.

Yarns
Lace and heavy lace weight are recommended. It’s a large shawl so using fingering weight will give you a giant shawl!

Yardage – red Peony shown in second picture used 1046y / 957m of Dye Diana Dye PurBamboo{heavy lace} with US2.5 / 3mm needles. Test knit usage ranged from 874y to 1175y / 818m to 1075m. Link to picture and info of each test knitter’s shawl.

To best showcase the various stitch patterns of Peony, self-striping or variegated yarn with vast tonal differences is NOT recommended.

Gauge
Gauge isn’t important but will determine the final size of the shawl.
